Join us as VIMS associate research scientist Jim Gartland provides an overview of the VIMS shark survey, the longest-running, fishery-independent survey of shark populations in the world!
This survey, founded in 1973 (two years before the movie Jaws hit theaters), brought global attention to significant declines in shark populations due to overfishing and other stressors and was instrumental in providing the data upon which the first U.S. shark management plan was established in 1993.
Following the presentation, VIMS outreach staff will have an exhibit where you can interact with preserved shark specimens, jaws, shark longline gear, and more!
Free. No registration required. Seating is first-come, first-served.
